I have the privilege of participating this Friday and Saturday in two events celebrating literature and the arts, and at one of them, I’ll be reading my latest essay titled “Trail to the Past,” which was published yesterday in Intervals. If you happen to be in Gainesville or the Clermont area, you should consider checking out these events.
First, I’ll be joining other members of the Writers of Alliance in Gainesville (WAG) on Friday, April 24th for the Alachua County Arts Council’s 5th Annual Artists Conference, which will be hosted at the Historic Thomas Center at 302 NE Sixth Avenue in downtown Gainesville. The event will run all day and will include musical performances and informative lectures for aspiring artists, and I’ll be joining other WAG members from 3:00 to 3:45 to read our essays and poems tied to the theme of “Where Nature and Culture Meet.”

My reading will be of “Trail to the Past,” a short essay published this week by Intervals, an online publication affiliated with Pictura Journal. My piece describes my imagination’s journey back in time during a recent hike in the Little Big Econ State Forest near my Central Florida home, where the sights and sounds brought to life the history I never learned in school. I suppose I could just as easily have titled it “Why I Hike.”

Then on Saturday, April 25th, Kara and I will be returning to the Sunshine Book Co. in Clermont for its all-day celebration of Independent Bookstore Day. Among the festivities will be local authors showcasing their books in the backyard behind Sunshine Book Co.’s pretty historic store at 647 Lake Avenue in downtown Clermont. I’ve been privileged to have Finding My Way Home: Fighting Depression Backpacking in Central Florida on their shelves for more than a year, so Kara and I are pleased to be joining them again this year. This is a great way to meet local authors, and Kara and I are excited to be a part of their event again.
I look forward to seeing you!
